A Great Bakery in Nelson, BC

By Sheilamarie Nellis

Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, has some quirky people with eclectic tastes living there. So it was without surprise that when I ventured into a back alley bakery tucked behind the Bank of Montreal called "Au Pain Vivant," I was to discover a gem of a bakery.

The smell of fresh bread is the first thing you notice when you open the door. The second thing is the sound of the French language as the bakers chatter to each other as they work. Although they were quick to attend to me as I approached the counter, I was not as quick to give my order. There were so many wonderful varieties of bread to choose from that it was difficult to decide. I finally settled on a simple sour dough bread.

However, when I looked up at their chalk board on the side wall, I knew I would be there longer yet. This bakery carries several great cheeses from a variety of sources. I purchased a wedge of Papillon Roquefort, always a favourite at our house, and a Quebec cheese I had never tried before. The Quebec cheese, whose name I cannot remember, has to be my current favourite cheese. I will have to return to Au Pain Vivant to get some more and to find out more about this cheese so I can write another intel about it.

They also carried a hard sheep's cheese from Spain and a local goat cheese.

The bakers originated from the region around Chateauguay, Quebec, and were happy to talk about their hometown, which was where my husband and I had had our wedding invitations printed back in the 1970's.

Our visit at the bakery was the highlight of our last trip to Nelson, and we look forward to making Au Pain Vivant a regular stop on our future visits to that town.
