Procrastinator's Valentine's Day celebrations
By Sheilamarie Nellis
Ah, romance! Sweet nothings! Can’t wait for Valentine’s Day . . . tomorrow? What do you mean it’s tomorrow?! Help! For those of you who, like me, put things off to the last minute, here are some Valentine’s Day ideas you can still do. Breakfast: 1. Grate a beet into your pancake batter. The batter will turn pink without artificial food coloring, because after all, your love is the real thing! Pour the batter onto the griddle in a heart shape. You can do it. 2. Grease the inside of a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Put it into your pan and break your egg into it. Cook gently. Aww, a heart filled with love! 3. If you have another heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut your bread into heart shapes. If I were you, I’d do this before toasting the bread, or you’ll end up with a mess. Don’t bother trying to butter it with heart shaped butter because you’ll get very frustrated and besides once it melts, no one would notice it anyway. Any additional heart-shaped cookie cutters you may have could double as earrings you can wear all day! All you need to do is tie dental floss around them and attach the dental floss to a pair of your least favorite dangly earrings. Some people have the foresight to pick up a pair of cheap heart earrings at one of those displays at the end of a grocery store aisle when they were buying Cheerios in early February, but I’m guessing you were not one of those. Don’t despair. At least you were smart enough to stock up on heart-shaped cookie cutters last March when they were on sale. Boy are you glad you did. Lunch and Dinner: 1. Have any chocolate chips in the pantry? Put them into a small sauce pan, put the small pan into a larger pan filled with boiling water kept on low heat. Stir until they melt. Now, I hope you have some fruit on hand because they would be really nice cut into chunks and dipped into the melted chocolate. Strawberries are especially nice sliced because they look like hearts on their own, without any coaxing on your part. If you don’t have fruit, you could use almonds or even those stale marshmallows left over from Santa’s Christmas hot chocolate. 2. What do you have planned for dinner? You could make that canned soup even more special by turning the lights low, adding candles to your table decor, and putting on a little music. Try something soft. Even heavy metal can be agreeable when the volume is turned down low enough. When all is said and done, it is really more about the conversation than the food anyway, don’t you think? However, you are totally on your own in that department.
