Puppets and Dolls
By Sheilamarie Nellis
When I was a little girl, my dolls were alive. They were my children that loved me and needed me. And I loved them and cared for them, too. As I grew older, and my parents had more children, my little sisters became the locus of my love and attention. I often made them dolls and puppets. I made puppets with my own children later still. When my middle son went to college and majored in directing, he developed a special interest in puppetry. In an apprenticeship, he spent a few months with the Bread and Puppet Theater in Glover, Vermont. After he finished his studies, he and a friend went on tour with a set and some puppets, performing at art galleries, cafes, and college campuses all across the country. Now that I have granddaughters, I am still interested in dolls and puppets. There are numerous ways in which puppets can be used. They are wonderful for telling folk tales and fairy tales. Puppets are also effective for getting across a more political message, as is done at the Bread and Puppet Theater. I once saw a performance in New York City of the opera The Barber of Seville in which puppets performed the parts of the main characters on stage while the singers, also on stage, sang. This was very effective. For example, when young Rosina was feeling oppressed by Doctor Bartolo, her guardian, her puppet came on stage as a very small person while Bartolo appeared huge, towering over her. At other parts of the opera, three heads of each character appeared simultaneously as they sang emphatically, expressing strong passions. Puppets were used effectively to portray the emotions being sung. I am not a doll collector per se. I don’t keep dolls in a cupboard or on shelves in my home. And the puppets I have made in the past have either been given away or eaten up by mice. But I appreciate the role a special doll can have in a child’s life. And I have seen some of the ways puppets have been used to tell a story or to get across a point. I am sure I will continue to use puppets myself and to appreciate how others use them as well. They are, after all, extensions of some very important emotions and ideas that we can share with others, whether those others are very young or young at heart.
